97+ Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is also brilliant and is a fabulous value that should be snatched up by readers. Sporting an inky purple color, it has a textbook Howell Mountain nose of gamey blue fruits, pine forest, savory herbs, iron, and crushed rock. With fabulous concentration, a pure, seamless texture, serious amounts of ripe tannins, and a blockbuster finish, this is one classy Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon that will benefit from 4-5 years (it can be drunk today) and will keep for 2-3 decades. The blend is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 5% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Saint Macaire, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Carmenere, all brought up in 80% new French oak." - Jeb Dunnuck (1/31/2019)

92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Very deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (containing splashes of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) opens with expressive crushed plums, mulberries and cassis with touches of dark chocolate, baking spice and black soil. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with approachable, spicy black fruit, framed by grainy tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing long with a pleasant herbal lift. 5,899 cases were made." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (29th Dec 2017)

93 Points - Antonio Galloni's Vinous:
"Dunn's 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is gorgeous. Potent and unctuous in the glass, the 2015 is going to drink beautifully right out of the gate. Inky red and purplish fruit, iron, cedar leather, smoke, licorice and dried flowers are ample and generous in this fleshy, inviting Cabernet. The Napa Valley Cabernet is 60% Coombsville and 40% Howell Mountain fruit, a combination that works very nicely here." - Antonio Galloni (Dec 2018)

"(10% new French oak) Pale gold. Aromas of fresh pear peach and Meyer lemon pick up hints of smoky lees and jasmine with air. Juicy and seamless on the palate offering pliant orchard and pit fruit flavors sharpened by a snap of bitter citrus zest. Finishes sappy floral and quite long with a lingering suggestion of buttered toast. (Oct 2018)

Notes from the Winemaker:
What pairs best with Memorial Day & 4th of July? For me, the answer is Zinfandel. Although the grape allegedly originated in Croatia, Zinfandel thrives better in California than any place else, period. For that reason, Zinfandel is purely American. If I had to choose only one Zinfandel to serve, it would have to be Gamba. A perennial crowd favorite and proving to be top contenders on California’s Zinfandel scene, Gus Gamba’s old vine Zinfandels are gaining world-wide acclaim. After Robert Parker’s latest visit to the winery, he alerted readers “…Gamba’s name is going to have to be included with some of the stars of Sonoma, such as Hartford Court, Carlisle, Bedrock and even the superstar Turley over in Napa.”

"Bottled in August, the 2017 Chardonnay Napa Valley offers Aubert-like notes of white flowers, white peach, tangerine, flower oil, and white flowers. It's rich, layered, so pure and balanced, and is just a class act as well as one of the top Chardonnays in this report." - Jeb Dunnuck (1/31/2019)

Notes from the Winemaker:
The 2014 SAVANT is a bold, complex wine that combines the intensity of a Paso syrah with the complexity that cabernet sauvignon brings to the table. Speaking of the table, this wine is great with the usual grilled meat like trip-tip or lamb with herbs and garlic, or try matching it with the rich flavors and layered spices found in Moroccan and Middle Eastern stews like a lamb tagine, or roasted cauliflower with chickpeas or lentils and a ras el hanout spice blend

Appearance: Deep, nearly opaque, purple ruby core lightening toward the rim with thick, slow forming moderately stained tears on the glass.

Aroma: Intense and layered with black berry jam and ripe black cherry jam fruit, sweet spice of vanilla and cinnamon, with smoky oak notes, cracked pepper, leather, and in time some hints of smoked meat mixed with complex red and purple floral accents.

Palate: Full on the palate with very ripe lush black fruit and baking spice on the entry followed with dried savory herbs, cracked black pepper and smoky elements going into the mid-palate. The finish is very long and complex with a mix of returning ripe fruit, chocolate and chewy tannins as it slowly unfolds.

Varietal Compostion: 62% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Grenache

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This blend of 62% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Grenache shows relatively restrained aromas of dark chocolate, blackberry, crushed asphalt and baking spice. There is decent tension to the sour and ripe elements of the palate, with hearty flavors of black cherry, black pepper, fennel and vanilla." - Matt Kettmann (11/1/2017)

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Composed of 62% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Grenache, the 2014 Savant Proprietary Red reveals a deep garnet-purple color and notes of cassis, black berries and black forest cake plus touches of cedar, toast, cinnamon stick and mocha. Very big, full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the opulent fruit is supported by firm, chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on a lingering peppery note." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (29th Sep 2017)

90 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2014 Savant (a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache) more blackberry, peppery spice, ground herbs and spice in a ripe, sexy, nicely textured style. It's already drinking nicely, yet has plenty of underlying tannin and should easily keep through 2024." - Jeb Dunnuck (8/10/2017)

Wine Spectator Magazine:
"A sturdy red, with broad notes of black currant, bitter chocolate and smoked pepper and herb. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Best after 2018. 2,400 cases made." – TF (Web Only - 2017)
