"Blue fruit and high acidity open this delightful Pinot Noir, from a cool section of the Russian River Valley overlapping Green Valley. The oak imprint is low, yet the wine offers firm structure and elegance, remaining subdued and fresh on the palate in swirls of dark cherry, boysenberry and earthy leather." - Virginie Boone (5/1/2015)

Notes From The Winemaker:

Founded in 1998, FAILLA is the project of winemaker Ehren Jordan and his wife Anne-Marie Failla. Failla is dedicated to sourcing cool climate fruit from the coastal areas of California and making wine using traditional Burgundian methods. Ehren began his debut in the California wine industry in 1994, followed by a sojourn to Burgundy. Upon his return and after many years of making wines for both Neyers Vineyards and Turley Wine Cellars, Ehren decided to lay down his own bricks and mortar. During 2004, 10 acres of land was purchased on the Silverado Trail in the Napa Valley, complete with a vintage yellow farm house and 1800's stone winery. The parcel bares a five acre apple orchard destined to be replaced by vines. In addition to renovating the existing facility, a nearly 12,000 square foot, bi-level fermentation room featuring gravity-flow wine movement is under-way.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points & "Editor's Choice" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2011 vintage):
"It’s hard to believe that this fabulous Pinot is Failla’s least expensive selection; what a great indication of his 2011s yet to come and of the vintage in general. It’s bone dry and rich in raspberry flavor, with brisk acidity, firm minerality and a perfectly applied jacket of smoky oak. Elegant, pure and savory, it’s just beautiful to drink now." — (12/31/2012)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2011 vintage):
"The 2011 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a hugely delicious, entry-level wine. Small red berries, licorice, mint and spices all come together in a wine that reflects the cool, insistent minerality of the year. This superbly enjoyable, delicious Pinot is an absolute joy to taste. All the Failla signatures are very much present in the appellation Pinot. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021.

Ehren Jordan is one of those people who are maddeningly talented at many things. Jordan recently left his post at Turley, where he spent nearly 20 years making a dizzying array of superb Zinfandels. At Failla, which Jordan owns with his wife Anne-Marie, the focus is on cool-climate Chardonnays and Pinots, rendered in a range that approximates Turley when it comes to the number of different bottlings. Did I mention Jordan is versed in the classics and is also a licensed pilot? Jordan wants to spend more time at Failla, and I believe it, given the breadth of this range. Frankly, I can’t imagine how Ehren took care of similarly large portfolios at both Turley and Failla while maintaining a sense of sanity. It will be interesting to see how things develop at Failla. The wines are already stellar, as I hope these notes amply demonstrate. Simply put, Failla is a reference point winery for the Sonoma Coast. This is as good as it gets." - Antonio Galloni (Apr 2013)

97+ Points - Antonio Galloni's Vinous Media:
"Long-time Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon has produced yet another in a string of superb Champagnes with the 2007 Cristal. Rich, powerful and enveloping, the 2007 takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. The aromatics alone are captivating, but then the wine opens on the palate, revealing layer after layer of flavor to match a multi-dimensional, kaleidoscopic personality that will leave Champagne lovers weak at the knees. The 2007 is 58% Chardonnay and 42% Pinot Noir, which is to say a bit more Chardonnay-leaning than is the norm. The 2007 is striking today, but it should also age effortlessly for several decades. It is also without question one of the very finest new releases of the year."

94 Points - Wine Spectator:
"This offers fine detail and texture on the palate, carrying an expressive range of poached quince and black currant fruit, coffee liqueur, garam masala, spun honey and raw almond. Fresh and focused, this is a boon from the hot 2003 vintage, showing a sense of finesse on the subtle finish. Disgorged winter 2013. Drink now through 2025." – AN (Dec 15, 2014)

93 Points - Allen Meadows' Burghound:
Moderate golden color. A ripe, complex and mildly exotic nose combines notes of apricot and peach with plenty of yeast and baked bread nuances. There is real volume and concentration to the exceptionally rich, even heady flavors that possess outstanding depth on the palate coating finish that is supported by just enough effervescence to keep the balance. This is one of those distinctly particular wines that one either admires for being exceptional in every sense or that one finds "just too much". While it is not what I usually search for in fine Champagne it is unquestionably well made and despite very definitely being a creature of its vintage, it retains its "Krugness". For my taste it is ready as I would rather drink it now while it is still fresh, but the underlying material is indisputably present to allow for much depth to develop with time." - (Oct 15, 2014)

"Fresh, zesty spiced lemon and citrus notes of top Meunier and elegantly built Chardonnay, with a hint of honeysuckle and spice. Supremely subtle mouthfeel, showing textural quince and plum flavours.Optimally ripe, not heavy, with magical, very Krug-like acidity. It's so fresh. From a fine Chardonnay year, it has the ideal blend of 39% Chardonnay, 37% Pinot Noir and 24% Pinot Meunier. Great potential." - Michael Edwards (Sept 2017)

This is all about balance and the integration of power and finesse, with finely honed acidity supporting flavors of quince paste, dried black cherry, spun honey and candied orange zest, while rich notes of roasted walnut, coffee liqueur and toasted cardamom resonate on the finish. Hard to stop sipping. Drink now through 2028. From France." —A.N. (Sep 25, 2013)

"Oak brings strong buttered toast and vanilla flavors to this Chardonnay. But it’s also a powerhouse from the vineyard, with massive orange, pineapple and apricot flavors. May even have some botrytis, to judge from the honeyed sweetness. Yet for all the opulence, the finish is dry."  — S.H.  (3/1/2012)
