Krug Brut Vintage 1996 (Champagne, France) - [RP 98]
Krug Brut Vintage 1996 (Champagne, France) - [RP 98]
Retail Price: $1,290.00

99 Points & #10 Top 100 of 2007 - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"A powerful, majestic Champagne. Deep and compelling, with aromas of whole-grain toast, coconut and dried citrus that draw you in. Lean and racy on the palate, with a creaminess that's yet to be integrated. A classic '96, with ripe, exotic aromas and a steely structure. Still a baby, with the long, resonant finish confirming its potential. Best from 2009 through 2040. 10,000 cases made." — BS (July 2007)

"Bollinger’s NV Special Cuvée knocks it out of the park. Made from 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and the rest Pinot Meunier, with 30% of the blend brought up in barrels, it boasts a rich, deep, medium to full-bodied style as well as terrific notes of lemon curd, crème brûlée, caramelized stone fruits, and hints of toasty nuttiness that develop with time in the glass. It’s a big, rich Champagne that stays balanced and pure. Beautiful stuff." - Jeb Dunnuck (03/15/2018)

"Blue fruit and high acidity open this delightful Pinot Noir, from a cool section of the Russian River Valley overlapping Green Valley. The oak imprint is low, yet the wine offers firm structure and elegance, remaining subdued and fresh on the palate in swirls of dark cherry, boysenberry and earthy leather." - Virginie Boone (5/1/2015)

Notes From The Winemaker:

Founded in 1998, FAILLA is the project of winemaker Ehren Jordan and his wife Anne-Marie Failla. Failla is dedicated to sourcing cool climate fruit from the coastal areas of California and making wine using traditional Burgundian methods. Ehren began his debut in the California wine industry in 1994, followed by a sojourn to Burgundy. Upon his return and after many years of making wines for both Neyers Vineyards and Turley Wine Cellars, Ehren decided to lay down his own bricks and mortar. During 2004, 10 acres of land was purchased on the Silverado Trail in the Napa Valley, complete with a vintage yellow farm house and 1800's stone winery. The parcel bares a five acre apple orchard destined to be replaced by vines. In addition to renovating the existing facility, a nearly 12,000 square foot, bi-level fermentation room featuring gravity-flow wine movement is under-way.

Ratings & Reviews

95 Points & "Editor's Choice" - Wine Enthusiast Magazine (2011 vintage):
"It’s hard to believe that this fabulous Pinot is Failla’s least expensive selection; what a great indication of his 2011s yet to come and of the vintage in general. It’s bone dry and rich in raspberry flavor, with brisk acidity, firm minerality and a perfectly applied jacket of smoky oak. Elegant, pure and savory, it’s just beautiful to drink now." — (12/31/2012)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (2011 vintage):
"The 2011 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a hugely delicious, entry-level wine. Small red berries, licorice, mint and spices all come together in a wine that reflects the cool, insistent minerality of the year. This superbly enjoyable, delicious Pinot is an absolute joy to taste. All the Failla signatures are very much present in the appellation Pinot. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021.

Ehren Jordan is one of those people who are maddeningly talented at many things. Jordan recently left his post at Turley, where he spent nearly 20 years making a dizzying array of superb Zinfandels. At Failla, which Jordan owns with his wife Anne-Marie, the focus is on cool-climate Chardonnays and Pinots, rendered in a range that approximates Turley when it comes to the number of different bottlings. Did I mention Jordan is versed in the classics and is also a licensed pilot? Jordan wants to spend more time at Failla, and I believe it, given the breadth of this range. Frankly, I can’t imagine how Ehren took care of similarly large portfolios at both Turley and Failla while maintaining a sense of sanity. It will be interesting to see how things develop at Failla. The wines are already stellar, as I hope these notes amply demonstrate. Simply put, Failla is a reference point winery for the Sonoma Coast. This is as good as it gets." - Antonio Galloni (Apr 2013)

100 Points & Cellar Selection – Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This latest incarnation of the famous brand is a superb wine. It is on par with, maybe even better than, the already legendary 2002. Its balance is impeccable: Apple and citrus flavors working with the tight minerality to give a textured yet fruity wine. Produced from Roederer's own vineyards which are mainly biodynamic, the wine has its own intense purity and crispness. It has amazing potential and is likely to age for many years. Drink from 2020." - RV (Dec 2017)

95 Points - Decanter Magazine:
"Fresh, zesty spiced lemon and citrus notes of top Meunier and elegantly built Chardonnay, with a hint of honeysuckle and spice. Supremely subtle mouthfeel, showing textural quince and plum flavours.Optimally ripe, not heavy, with magical, very Krug-like acidity. It's so fresh. From a fine Chardonnay year, it has the ideal blend of 39% Chardonnay, 37% Pinot Noir and 24% Pinot Meunier. Great potential." - Michael Edwards (Sept 2017)

"Oak brings strong buttered toast and vanilla flavors to this Chardonnay. But it’s also a powerhouse from the vineyard, with massive orange, pineapple and apricot flavors. May even have some botrytis, to judge from the honeyed sweetness. Yet for all the opulence, the finish is dry."  — S.H.  (3/1/2012)

Bright minerality and fresh-cut hay qualities are apparent on the nose, followed by zesty citrus and stone-fruit notes. Seamless fruit flavors of grapefruit, lemon and gooseberry shine through on the mid-palate, complemented by a crisp acidity that carries through from start to finish. The higher acidity in this wine makes it a perfect accompaniment to a wide array of food, particularly fresh summer salads, grilled seafood, tomato-based dishes and guacamole.

“What I love most about this wine is that it has a true sense of place, by fermenting and aging without oak, you allow the flavor influences from the vineyard to really shine through”
