Notes from the Winemaker:
The 2014 SAVANT is a bold, complex wine that combines the intensity of a Paso syrah with the complexity that cabernet sauvignon brings to the table. Speaking of the table, this wine is great with the usual grilled meat like trip-tip or lamb with herbs and garlic, or try matching it with the rich flavors and layered spices found in Moroccan and Middle Eastern stews like a lamb tagine, or roasted cauliflower with chickpeas or lentils and a ras el hanout spice blend

Appearance: Deep, nearly opaque, purple ruby core lightening toward the rim with thick, slow forming moderately stained tears on the glass.

Aroma: Intense and layered with black berry jam and ripe black cherry jam fruit, sweet spice of vanilla and cinnamon, with smoky oak notes, cracked pepper, leather, and in time some hints of smoked meat mixed with complex red and purple floral accents.

Palate: Full on the palate with very ripe lush black fruit and baking spice on the entry followed with dried savory herbs, cracked black pepper and smoky elements going into the mid-palate. The finish is very long and complex with a mix of returning ripe fruit, chocolate and chewy tannins as it slowly unfolds.

Varietal Compostion: 62% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Grenache

Ratings & Reviews

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"This blend of 62% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Grenache shows relatively restrained aromas of dark chocolate, blackberry, crushed asphalt and baking spice. There is decent tension to the sour and ripe elements of the palate, with hearty flavors of black cherry, black pepper, fennel and vanilla." - Matt Kettmann (11/1/2017)

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Composed of 62% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Grenache, the 2014 Savant Proprietary Red reveals a deep garnet-purple color and notes of cassis, black berries and black forest cake plus touches of cedar, toast, cinnamon stick and mocha. Very big, full-bodied, rich and concentrated, the opulent fruit is supported by firm, chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing on a lingering peppery note." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown (29th Sep 2017)

90 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"The 2014 Savant (a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache) more blackberry, peppery spice, ground herbs and spice in a ripe, sexy, nicely textured style. It's already drinking nicely, yet has plenty of underlying tannin and should easily keep through 2024." - Jeb Dunnuck (8/10/2017)

Wine Spectator Magazine:
"A sturdy red, with broad notes of black currant, bitter chocolate and smoked pepper and herb. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Best after 2018. 2,400 cases made." – TF (Web Only - 2017)

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Snappy aromas of boysenberry and black raspberry mark a somewhat lighter, brighter spin on this classic blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc and 11% Merlot. Smashed plums and berries run into tobacco and herbs on the palate, where bright acidity pushes into the finish." - Matt Kettmann (12/31/2018)

91 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Deep and lush aromas of candied blueberry and black cherry meet with chocolate cake, light brown spices and a touch of beef jerky on the nose of this judiciously priced wine. Though a tad light on the palate at first, it has an energetic and spicy acidity that carries forth flavors of tobacco and black fruit." - Matt Kettmann (12/1/2016 )

97-99+ Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Showing the potential of the Bordeaux varieties in these limestone soils on the west side of Paso Robles, the 2015 My Favorite Neighbor Proprietary Blend is a smokin' blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Petit Verdot that's aged all in French oak. Locked and loaded, with tons of jammy blackberry fruits, creme de cassis, sweet oak, violets and chalky minerality, this tour de force is full-bodied, incredibly rich and structured. Forget it for 2-3 years and drink over the following 15-20 years." - Jeb Dunnuck (30th Aug 2016)

"The 2017 My Favorite Neighbor is in the same ballpark and offers terrific notes of crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, lead pencil shavings, and cedary herbs. It’s a full-bodied, silky, impeccably balanced beauty that has just subtle background oak, a stacked mid-palate, and terrific purity of fruit." - Jeb Dunnuck (11/29/2018)

"A value-priced Rhône blend that usually contains some Zinfandel and Petite Syrah, the 2017 Pessimist offers up rich aromas of dark fruit, grilled meat, licorice and black olive. It's full-bodied, rich and spicy, with good balance and an intense, flavorful finish." - William Kelley (31st May 2018)

91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2015 Cote de Tablas Blanc, which includes less Viognier than normal, checks in as an even split of Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Marsanne. It's a perfumed, elegant and textured white that offers lots of citrus and saltiness as well as more background notes of chamomile, flowers and spice. It will shine on the dinner table, and while I'd lean toward drinking bottles over the coming couple of years, it will evolve for longer." - Jeb Dunnuck (Jul 8th, 2016)

92-94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
“Tasted from barrel, the 2014 Optimus shows more red fruit than the '13, with lots of black raspberries, dried flowers and violet characteristics present in its full-bodied, rich, expansive and mouth-filling profile. It has surprising complexity as well as a great mid-palate, so I suspect it will shine on release.” –Jeb Dunnuck (Aug 2015)

90-92 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Tasted from barrel, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is very promising, revealing a youthfully primary bouquet of currants and plums that's already integrated its new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, richly structured and generous, with a sun-kissed core of fruit and a dry, fine-grained finish. A cuvée that includes purchased fruit, this is typically a great value. I'm looking forward to seeing it from bottle." - William Kelley (31st May 2018)

94 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The brilliant 2012 Seventeen Forty Reserve is 70% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot. Exhibiting high class aromas of blackcurrants, coffee bean, crushed flowers and hints of chocolate, it flows onto the palate with full-bodied richness, building tannin and a terrific finish. In addition to all of its fruit and texture, this beauty stays lively, fresh and elegant, and shows the quality these Bordeaux blends can hit here in Paso Robles." - Jeb Dunnuck (Aug 2014)
