Notes from the Winemaker:
A block of newer plantings in the Paragon Vineyard of the Edna Valley on the Central Coast of California is the sole source of fruit for the tangent Pinot Gris. Benefiting from the cool influence of the Pacific only four miles to the left, this vineyard is afforded one of the longest growing seasons in the state. Soils here are a mixture of volcanic, clay loam and rocky marine sediment, offering few nutrients. The temperate climate brings extended hang time, and the soils cause the vines to stress and strain as they grow. These two factors ultimately culminate in fully ripe, concentrated fruit that bursts with flavor.

As tangent aims to produce vibrant wines of good acid structure to be naturally enjoyed with a wide range of foods, this wine was made without any oak influence, nor did any portion of it go through malo-lactic fermentation. An evocative aperitif on its own, tangent Pinot Gris also pairs well with most foods, shellfish and some hard cheeses in particular.

What Does It Taste Like?

“Bright and refreshing, this pinot gris is framed by crisp acidity and vibrant minerality. It has a surprisingly silky mouthfeel, with concentrated flavors of ripe apples and white peaches, and a very slight herbaceous note. A great wine on its own, tangent pinot gris pairs well with a wide range of foods from seafood to grilled sausages.” -Christian Roguenant, Winemaker

Ratings & Reviews

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Playing in that same ballpark and a solid representation of the variety, the 2012 Pinot Gris is lively, perfumed and fresh, with plenty of lemongrass, citrus rind and hints of minerality to go with a medium-bodied, deliciously fresh and clean palate. A perfect hot summer day quaffer, it should drink nicely for a year or two. Drink now-2014." - Jeb Dunnuck (Aug 2013)

Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"There’s a honeyed finish to this unoaked wine along with peach, Meyer lemon and nectarine flavors. Vibrant acidity makes it a clean and vibrant Pinot Gris." -S.H. 12/31/13

Wine Spectator Magazine:

A juicy expression of lemon, lime, grapefruit and green apple, with a light body and plenty of acidity on the finish. Drink now. 2,364 cases made." –MW (Dec 31, 2013)
