Notes from the Winemaker:
Like musicians, there are grape varieties that do their best when playing with others, and then there are soloists who need the spotlight – Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are among these. These two varietals are also among the best interpreters of their places of origin. The Loners are single vineyard, single varietal wines made from Pinot Noir and/or Chardonnay, which see minimal influence in the winemaking process and thus tell their story of place and time.

Ratings & Reviews

94 Points - Antonio Galloni's Vinous:
"The 2014 Pinot Noir Las Orillas is deep and strikingly resonant, with attractive tobacco, earthiness and savory notes that add layers of nuance to the intense bold Pinot fruit. The 2014 was done with a generous amount of whole clusters, but that is not especially evident. This is a gorgeous wine from Mattias Pippig." - Antonio Galloni (Sep 2018)

93 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:
"As to the Pinot Noir from this estate, the 2014 Loner Pinot Noir Las Orillas comes from the John Sebastiano estate in the Sta. Rita Hills. Its deeper ruby color is followed by an Old World bouquet of red currants, smoked meats, sous bois, and gamey forest floor notes. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and layered on the palate, it's a powerful, beautifully balanced Pinot Noir that should keep for 10-12 years." - Jeb Dunnuck (10/15/2018)

93 Points - Wine Enthusiast Magazine:
"Strong aromas of sagebrush, cranberry, cooked cherries and wild forest herbs show on the nose of this bottling by Matthias Pippig, one of the few single-varietal wines he creates. The expressive palate offers stewed cherry, thyme and savory herbs, with spicy peppercorns popping on the finish." - Matt Kettmann (4/1/2019)
