Press / Wine Critic's Reviews
About This Wine:

Quinta do Vesuvio, Douro Superior. One of the Douro’s legendary quintas with a very rich heritage. It is also one of the region’s largest estates with a total area of 325 hectares (803 acres), of which 136 hectares (336 acres) under vine. 30% is planted with Touriga Nacional, whilst Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz each account for approximately 20%. Tinta Amarela and Sousão are also significant.

The grapes were hand picked and transported in 20Kg boxes to the Quinta do Sol winery, where vinification took place in the new gravity flow fermenters - after going through a rigorous triage process, including bunch and berry selection. The berries were transferred to the fermentation tanks and delicately crushed. After inoculation with selected yeast, fermentation took place at a controlled temperature of 25-27ºC (77-79 ºF). Malolactic fermentation was induced with a frozen culture of lactic acid bacteria prior to
ageing in barrel.

Ratings & Reviews

91 points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Named after the dovecote on the Vesuvio estate, this wine comes from low-yield vines. It is certainly concentrated while preserving plenty of open fruit. The black-cherry and blackberry flavors are combined with some firm dry tannins that will allow the wine to age further."

90 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2015 Pombal do Vesúvio (Quinta do Vesúvio) is mostly 50% Touriga Nacional and 45% Touriga Franca with a dollop of Tinta Amarela, aged for ten months in French oak. It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. This is lighter in style but seems elegant and shows finesse with vivid flavor. It is also wonderfully fresh and lifted with a lingering, delicious finish. It will drink great young and age reasonably well, but I doubt it will truly reward much cellaring. Right now this is all about the gorgeous fruit. We'll see in time if it turns into anything more. There were 2,958 cases produced along with 249 magnums." - Mark Squires (31st Aug 2017)

Wine Spectator Magazine:
"A juicy red, with fresh raspberry, plum and anise notes bound together with lip-smacking acidity. Tangy, with spice and floral notes chiming in on the finish. Drink now. 2,000 cases made." – GS (Jul 31, 2017)
