Notes from the Winemaker:

APPELLATION / VINEYARDS
The Somerston Estate is our 1628-acre property with 72.2 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Located high in the eastern hills of Napa Valley, Somerston sits at elevations ranging from 820 to 2400 feet. We selected this Cabernet Sauvignon from 11 different hillside blocks.

HARVEST
W hat began with a wet winter and spring continued with rainfall into mid-June set the stage for a long, cooler-than-average growing season with a later-than-average harvest beset with autumn rain storms. This timetable continued through the somewhat cool summer season where harvest for the first varieties for sparkling
wines found the latest harvest start in anyone’s memory, beginning August 29. Few high heat events occurred at any point this year, but growers managed more open vine canopies to ensure sunlight, warmth and good air circulation around the grape clusters.

AGING
22 months in 35% New French Oak and 65% Neutral French Oak. Racked 3 times in the first year and 3 times in the second year of aging. Bottle unfined and unfiltered.

NOTES

This is the fifth release of Priest Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon from our Somerston Estate. It shows aromas of dark chocolate, Blackberry, spice, and dark cherry. On the palate, the wine is smooth yet full bodied and refined, with ripe dark berries, juicy chocolate, and a touch of spice. This silky rich wine has a long finish that keeps on giving!

Ratings & Reviews

88-91 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Priest Ranch jumps from the glass with freshly cut flowers, sweet dark berries and spices. A vinous, inviting wine, the 2011 shows excellent balance and plenty of potential for the future. This is a terrific effort for the year. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2023.

Craig Becker heads up winemaking for both the Somerston and Priest Ranch labels. This year I was particularly impressed by the Priest Ranch Cabernets because of the superb value they offer." - Antonio Galloni (Dec 2012)
