Notes from the Winemaker:
With a deep violet color, the wine displays clean; on the nose elegant aromas of spices, wild herbs and mature red fruits. On the palate, the wine is soft and elegant, a unique blend of sage, myrtle, rosemary, vanilla flavors and fine tannins. Notes of red fruits, pepper and liquorice add an interesting spiciness before a harmonious and persistent finish.

food pairing: Pairs well with meat, cheese, game.

Harvest note:
The 2013 vintage started at the end of August, as the Merlot grapes had already reached the right ripening; we proceeded then in mid September cutting the Cabernet Sauvignon and leaving the Carignano as usual to end of September/beginning of October. A few days of rain during beginning of September forced us to stop for a while, though the rain it didn't affect significantly the grapes. Quality wise, we had a good crop which allowed us to make a good selection for our wines.

Ratings & Reviews

93+ Points - Antonio Galloni's Vinous:
"Fully saturated deep ruby. Leafy nuances and notes of sassafras dominate the deep but youthfully reticent dark red fruit on the nose. Then smooth and dense, with forward flavors of red cherry, dark plum, cassis, and aromatic herbs. Finishes very long and spicy, with peppery tannins and building complexity. For maximum enjoyment, put this away in the cellar and open it in three to four years only. This is a blend of Carignano, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon." - Ian D'Agata (Oct 2016)

93 Points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
"Created by the same folks behind Tuscany's legendary Sassicaia, this is an all-Sardinian blend of 85% Carignano, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. The 2013 Barrua is a beautifully balanced and seamless expression with dark fruit aromas that flow effortlessly from the bouquet. Those tones of blackberry, prune and dried fig segue to spice, tar, licorice and black olive. This vintage really works in terms of the intensity and the precision of the bouquet. The tannins are integrated, and the wine is layered and long lasting. Some 125,000 bottles were produced." - Monica Larner (Dec 2017)

93 Points - James Suckling:
"Lovely precision to this red with berries, nutmeg and hints of stones. Subtle dried meat, too. Medium body, pretty texture and a refined finish. Always excellent. Drink now." - (November 22, 2016)

91 Points - Wine Spectator Magazine:
"Sleek and mouthwatering, this harmonious red features creamy tannins and layers of flavor, with black currant pâte de fruit, dried marjoram and smoky mineral notes accented by abundant ground white pepper, star anise and graphite details that play out on the finish. Carignano, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2025. 8,300 cases made." – AN (Oct 15, 2016)
